All my bags are packed…

Saturday, October 27th, 2007 by Jesper Thuun Petersen

Quoting John Denver seems suitable as this is the Colorado mountains, and Denver airport awaits tomorrow. Before that, my last blog from Colorado Software Summit 2007.
Even though the keynote were held by Simon Phipps, Chief Open Source Officer at Sun Microsystems, the two presentations that stand out and overshadow all the others were the [...]

Middle of the week

Thursday, October 25th, 2007 by Jesper Thuun Petersen

Wednesday did not end with me blogging away in my cell, but saw me chatting away late into the evening at the Tenderfoot Lounge bar.
It was an interesting day, where I managed to learn what REST is. the right approach to webservices and how it is possible to structure code by using a mix of [...]

Colorado Software Summit 2007

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007 by Jesper Thuun Petersen

The time is now almost eight o’clock, and I’ve been on conference schedule since 0830. Each day ends with a Q&A session, with no specific topic, and everyone is allowed to give opinions or ask questions. So, tuesday brought insight on several very different subjects. I went to five presentations on continuous integration, Groovy, [...]

That’s a wrap

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007 by Jesper Thuun Petersen

Wow, it’s been a long day. I’ve just returned to the sanctuary of my hotel room after a long java day, followed by a glass of wine (or two) and a Colorado Burger in the hotel bar. Robert Mondavi does make very drinkable Cabernet, and, as it turns out, so does the guys at the [...]

Keynote, monday morning

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007 by Jesper Thuun Petersen

The keynote presentation was held by John Soyring, vice president in IBM’s Solutions and Software division. An interesting talk from time to time, focusing on some of the modern day’s challenges, ranging from healthcare expenses, over climate change to terrorism. For my part, I would have prefered a more focused talk, as some of the [...]

The week’s packed program

Monday, October 22nd, 2007 by Jesper Thuun Petersen

There you have it. Not an insanely complicated suduko, but my schedule for the week, a tricky thing to put together, as most talks are repeated 3 times, on different days. I actually managed to weave together a program which allows me to see most of the presentations I want to see.
As for skiing, my [...]

Colorado Software Summit 2007

Sunday, October 21st, 2007 by Jesper Thuun Petersen

What a difference time makes!
When I last attended the Colorado Software Summit back in 1999, I was without computer and internet access for a week. Back then, the slides for the 50 different presentations were handed out in a very heavy ring binder, and sore shoulders were garanteed when carrying this load of papers around [...]

The use of dynamic vs aggregated functions

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007 by Jasper

An eyeopener for me when constructing sql queries in a complex environment was the use of analytic functions. As appose to aggregated functions, you can use more analytic functions on one table instead of constructing multiple inline views to accomplish “the same”.
For those of you who like to see examples:
select job_id
, sum(salary)
from employees
group by job_id;
has [...]

I Struck Oil at Miracle Oracle Open World 2007

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007 by Yuri van Buren

This was my second time at the Miracle Conference at Lalandia in Denmark.
Again it was “power-pact”.
Mogens Norgaard explained that a lot of conferences have about 80% information and only 20% networking possibilities. This conference is different. Mogens managed to increase the 20% networking up to 80% while still remaining 80% of usefull information. The way [...]
