I know it’s a bit off topic, this blogs main focus is Java, but hypes, rumours and a personal demonstration by Bruce Tate made me realize I should ‘do’ something with the scripting language called Ruby. I’m not going to write a lengthy blog about my initial impressions, instead I just provide a link to an excellent article not on the language itself but on how to get started. Really useful. Read and play ….
For those who can’t wait, here’s a link to download the ruby eclipse plugin and get started (assuming you’ve downloaded ruby itself from the ruby homepage, for windows users, this installer will save a lot of time).

Note that the windows installer is not fool-proof. When installing Ruby on my home pc and laptop the installer greyed out the install button. Fiddling with the directory name solved my problem.. So for those who have the same problem..

Additionally, to really see what the Ruby-on-Rails framework is
all about, the 15 minute introduction video says more
than a thousand documents.

And after watching the video start coding using this splendid how to start rolling guide. I actually tried this yesterday evening and was impressed by the simplicity. On the other hand, I already found out simplicity has its drawbacks that can lead to complexity. But my overall initial impression was more ‘wow!!’ than ‘archhh’

Ralph, what can’t solution was that intro video recorded at? I’m running at 1024×768 (laptop) and can’t see enough of the screen to work out what’s going on. What’s worse is that the stoopid Quicktime plugin doesn’t allow me to resize the image down or run it full screen.

What worked for me is saving a move with “save target as” and playing the movie with free Zoom Player.. Works like a charm..!
